Michael J. Murphy arrived in Carmel in 1900, and using his own designs and doing most of the building himself, became the most prolific designer-builder in the history of Carmel. Over 300 buildings in Carmel are attributed to MJ Murphy, most notably The Highlands Inn, the Carmel Art Association, The Holiday House, the Harrison Memorial Library, The Pine Inn, and our own Sea View Inn.

The Sea View Inn began as a suburban cottage built by M.J. Murphy for Abbie McDow and Amiee Jones in 1905.  In 1924, the Stout sisters opened the property as a “bed and breakfast”.
